Acer palmatum 'Red Spider'

Red Spider Japanese maple

A bright red form of the popular linearlobum group of Japanese Maples. The delicate leaves are dissected into long thread-like fingers giving the tree an unusually lacy appearance. The bright red color adds to the effect. Habit is upright and spreading to 15 feet tall over many years. Does well in full sun or part shade.

Because of the delicate dissected foliage, siting this maple in the landscape is important. Too much sun in hot climates and the leaves will scorch. Too much shade and the bright red color fades to green. Don't be alarmed if the summer flush of leaves comes out looking more like regular palmatum leaves. Next spring they will be thread-like again.
